Partial hair hilighting at a salon?

I have naturally medium brown hair and it runs in my family, but my aunt has been getting partial highlights for years (where her hair is completely blonde ontop) and I love it and wanted to try it out to know if it was going to be a love or bust. I never do my own hair so i was just wondering how much it would cost to get done? i live in tx btw. and if it would even look good on my hair since its fairly dark and I want a light shade of blonde.
